Germany had been investing in the the new technology of aviation with prizes and awards for breaking records. A large grant was made to Count Zeppelin to advance the airship and even Anthony Fokker from the Netherlands was prominent in that period.

The young men were Harry Kauper, Harry Busteed Harry Hawker and his brother Bert. Busteed and another friend Eric Harrison had made their minds up and made their way to England the next year.
